Technical Answers

Can I use a "Broadband" router with Firewall, DHCP and NAT?

Yes, you can use a "Broadband" router in your location.  There many versions available at most electronic stores, from wireless versions to hard-wired.

What Protocols does this connection use?
WOWACCESS's wireless connection utilizes TCP/IP for connectivity.

What sort of Email is supplied with my connection?
Email is included with each package.  Our email server supports POP, IMAP, and Web interface.  The email setting will be given to you at the time of installation.  Your email address will be username@wowaccess.net.

Does your service offer Web Space?
No.  At this time we do not offer any personal web space with your connection.  If you are looking for Web space, we can refer you to a great source.

Does your service offer any News feeds?
Yes.  For News feeds with your connection use news.wowaccess.net

Does your service offering include a dialup account?
No.  We do not offer dialup account with our offerings.  If this is something you need, please let us know.  We have talked to a dialup provider that will give special pricing for WOWACCESS customers.

Will I need a firewall?
An "always-on" connection is a system that is online and ready to go 24 hours a day. Nothing has to be turned on or dialed up in order to use it. What this means is that chances of someone seeing your through the Internet are greater than if you were just dialing up once in a while.  As with any "always-on" Internet connection, it is recommended that you use a firewall (software or hardware).  Most broadband routers or hubs include firewalls now.

Does WOWACCESS  have any software that I need to load on my computer?
No.  With our solution there is no special software to install.  All you need to have is an Operating System that supports TCP/IP, and has a NIC (Network Interface Card)

How secure is the wireless connection?
First, unlike analog telephone transmissions, digital transmissions of Internet traffic are much more difficult to intercept because of the complex cryptology associated with the technology. Second, our system provides over-the-air encryption, which cryptographically scrambles the data bits, preventing anyone "listening" to the airwaves from deciphering any messages. In fact, the our system’s over-the-air link may be the most secure leg of the typical user’s Internet connection.

Does weather affect the reliability of my service?
No. Rain, fog and other various weather conditions should not affect your service in most cases.  The technology used has been rigorously tested for over two years.

What if I have problems with the connection?

WOWACCESS has a Service Level Guarantee (SLG) with each WOWACCESS broadband wireless connection. If you have an outage that is caused by a problem with our network or the connection that lasts for 3 or more hours we will credit you for a full day of service. We cannot be responsible for internal networking issues that may cause you to have connection problems. You are responsible for maintaining your own network, servers, and network cabling.

General Answers
How does the wireless Internet service work?
WOWACCESS utilizes a license free band to provide wireless Internet service. This works by placing a small antenna at the customer location which is used to communicate with a WOWACCESS wireless network.  Our system uses the 5GHz-unlicensed National Information Infrastructure band, commonly called the U-NII band. This system was designed to provide the "last-mile" of high-speed data access for residential and business customers.

How are the local Telephone companies involved?
WOWACCESS does not involve local telephone or cable companies to get the service installed.  Our service is wireless.

I only pay $19.95 right now! Why would I want to pay more for Internet access?

Different people have different requirements for Internet access.

  • An additional phone line can run about $30.00 + dial-up Internet access service @ $19.95 = $49.95 per month.

Second line, per month:

$ 30.00

Dialup ISP:

$ 19.95
  $ 49.95

Cost per month, just for dialup

  • This means for around the same price per month you can have Internet access that is always-on (no disconnects or busy signals) and up to 30 times faster than a standard dial-up connection.
  • Businesses can see an even greater return in cost savings on phone lines.
  • If you do not currently have an additional phone line for Internet access, think about the important calls you might be missing because your phone line is busy.

I already have an Internet account with another provider why would I want to switch to WOWACCESS?
If you currently have an Internet account with another provider it is likely that you are using a dial-up service that uses a modem to connect to the Internet at speeds up to 56Kbps which has many disadvantages. WOWACCESS provides an always-on connection that is many times faster than dial-up allowing for a feature rich experience not possible with dial-up; say good-bye to busy signals, disconnects, slow downloads and other occurrences familiar to dial-up users. Say hello to always on Internet service that is many times faster than dial-up service and allows for a feature rich experience.

I'm waiting for DSL or cable modems, they are faster right?

DSL is a wonderful technology, but unless you are close to the phone company’s central office you will not be able to get it. I should also mention that currently DSL is not available in many areas, and may never be.

Cable modems are nice especially when other high-speed Internet access services are not available. Speeds are often not what they are advertised to be and the upload speeds leave a lot to be desired. I should also mention that at this point in time cable modem service is not available in many areas.

And no, DSL or cable modems are not necessarily faster.  We are able to offer many speed/priced packages depending on your needs.  Our services can include Upload and Download speeds not available in DSL, Cable, or Satellite. As time progresses we hope to offer our customers faster speeds, and new product offerings.

I hear satellite Internet access is fast how does it compare to WOWACCESS Internet service?

WOWACCESS provides superior Internet service when compared to satellite delivered Internet access with many advantages. There have been many recent articles describing the issues of satellite service experience such as slow downloads and or uploads, slow response, etc. Some of the issues are due to the latency inherent in a satellite environment cause by the great distance the data must travel (over 23,000 miles) which causes interactive Internet programs to react sluggishly or not at all. On top of that it is difficult to share the connections with other computers and only certain operating systems are able to be used with the service.

WOWACCESS provides standard methods of connecting computers to networks which allows for a broad range of computing devices to connect to the Internet without the need of nonstandard hardware or software, it is safe to say that in most cases if your computer can dial-up to the Internet now for Internet access your computer meets the requirements to function with the WOWACCESS network. Overall WOWACCESS provides many advantages, which satellite Internet access cannot, such as lower latency, higher overall transfer speeds (depending on service plan) and greater compatibility with Internet related software and hardware.

What happens if my antenna gets struck by lightning and is damaged?
If the antenna is installed and grounded properly, the antenna should be fine.  If it is damaged, most homeowner policies should cover damage.

Installation Answers
What  does a standard installation consist of?
Your installation professional will perform the following steps:
  • Mount the WOWACCESS antenna in the optimal spot at your location.
  • Consult with you on where to terminate the WOWACCESS service inside your premise.
  • Install up to 75 feet of antenna cable.
  • System grounding to meet national electrical codes.
  • Cable routing through structure with a single wall penetration.
  • Show you where to connect to your machine and verify that that you have access to the Internet.
Will I have a big unsightly antenna on my roof?
I guess that answer depends on what you call 'unsightly'. In most cases, the antenna, which is only 12inches by 4 inches, is mounted with a small bracket on the roof and is barely noticeable. In some cases the antenna might need to be mounted on a mast to get enough height.

What does it look like, how big is the antenna?

the antenna, which is installed at you location, measures only 3 ½ inches X 11 ¾ inches.  There are many different ways to mount the antenna at your location.  We use a standard mounting bracket (Click to see a mounted antenna).  Depending on your location there may need to be additional mounting hardware to locate the antenna in the optimal location to get the best signal.

I do not want the WOWACCESS cable run through an outside wall into a room. Can I have it installed in the attic?
Yes, for an extra installation fee we will route your Internet cable through your attic and down an interior wall.  The WOWACCESS installer will give you a price once he has seen your requirements.

I live in an area with a Home Owner's Association that does not permit outside antennas. Am I out of luck?
No. In May 2001, the FCC released a ruling commonly called 'OTARD' that specifically allows 'fixed wireless' antennas under 1 meter in size to be placed almost anywhere. And the antennas 'may be mounted on "masts" to reach the height needed to receive or transmit an acceptable quality signal'. This allows any height of mast, but does allow the city or Home Owners Association to require a permit for the mast as long as such permitting does not 'unreasonably delay or prevent use of; (2) unreasonably increase the cost of; or (3) preclude a person from receiving or transmitting an acceptable quality signal from an antenna'.

Who will setup my network?

We will configure your Internet connection to your office. It will be your responsibility to configure your internal network to work with the new connection. Someone in your company that is in charge of providing network support can perform this or you may have an outside vendor you use for network issues.  We'll be happy to recommend someone who can assist you with this type of configuration.
